First episode title: Heart Trouble
How familiar with the show am I?: I used to watch this one as a kid!
A stop-motion animated series about a hospital whose staff and patients are all anthropomorphic animals, Hilltop Hospital is a show I have fond memories of. But does it hold up when I watch it now?

Characters important to the plot of this episode include:
Dr Matthews, a dog who seems to be in charge
Nurse Kitty, a kind cat who has a crush on Dr Matthews
Surgeon Sally, a very stern and serious hippopotamus that Dr Matthews has a crush on
Dr Atticus, an elderly tortoise

In this episode, it's Valentine's Day. Kitty leaves an anonymous card for Matthews, who mistakenly assumes that it's from Sally, and Atticus encourages him to ask her out. Meanwhile, a lion patient at the hospital named Dandy Lion needs a new heart, and this happens to be the day that one is found for him. Sally successfully performs the operation, but the formerly weak lion wakes up grumpy and rampages through the hospital. A young boy elephant who had come in with persistent hiccups gets them scared out of him when Dandy roars at him! The sight of the child seems to calm the lion down. Matthews congratulates Sally on the operation and asks her out to dinner, but it quickly becomes clear that he was wrong about her giving him the card, and she rejects him. When she storms out, he tears up the card right before Kitty walks in. He starts to work out that the card was actually from her, but, before he can do anything about it, they're called away to another emergency.

The theme song is one of those ones that has been stuck in my head ever since my childhood. It's very catchy!
The Valentine's Day plot feels very soap opera for a young kids' show - I didn't remember the show focusing so heavily on this, but there are parts of the show's intro that reference the love triangle, so I suppose it's like this all the time! Of course, a lot of hospital dramas for adults are just the same, so that was probably their inspiration.

They slip some nice random gags that have nothing to do with the plot into the animation. I liked this bit that happens near the start while Kitty is hinting that Matthews should check his mail - Matthews is making himself coffee and accidentally overfills his cup, looking a little guilty at the mess he's just made!

There are a pair of bears called the Teds who drive the ambulance - in this episode they deliver the new heart to the hospital. They complain about the doctors bossing them around, as if delivering a new heart for someone didn't need doing quickly! They deliver the heart to a pair of literal lab rats.

The child elephant with the hiccups is a recurring presence throughout the episode until he finally gets cured. No-one says it out loud, but the boy's mother is obviously a circus elephant judging by the things she carries around with her. It makes you wonder how much people's species tend to dictate the jobs they can get in a world like this!

When Sally is about to perform the heart transplant, Matthews dithers over trying to ask her out, while they have a lion under anaesthetic on the table in front of them! Talk about neither the time nor the place... Speaking of the surgery, as much of it is shown as can be in a show like this - the new heart in a bag of ice gets passed around by the characters, and the patient is hooked up to a heart monitor and everything.

Dr Atticus is an amusingly absent-minded old guy. When he learns about the Valentine's card, he reminisces about one he received ninety years ago that he accidentally posted back to the sender! So I guess he's always been like that since he was young. Here's a gif of him being too close when Sally uses the defibrillator.

Dandy Lion's rampage gets set off because he wakes up hungry and Kitty only gives him vegetable risotto, as something that he will be able to ingest in his condition. He declares he's going to get himself some "fresh meat" and starts running through the hospital, smashing things up! Do these animals eat meat? It's always the kind of question that's weird to think about when you have a mix of animals in the cast. Like, was his statement something you would normally say or has he just outed himself as a cannibal?

There are a lot of plays on words throughout the whole episode, especially on phrases that focus on the word "heart" - heart in the right place, breaking your heart, etc. - tying in the surgery plotline with the Valentine's one. But imagine if you actually went to hospital with a heart problem and the staff were making jokes about it all around you!

On the subject of the above gif: yes, Matthews gets his paw caught in the lift doors. They even added a bone-crunching sound effect to it! Kids, be careful around lift doors!
Anyway, what does Matthews see in Sally? She doesn't seem to behave warmly towards him at any point in the episode. It should be obvious to him that there's no way she's his secret admirer! Still, I suppose seeing her through his crush could make him interpret her behaviour differently.

It's probably clear, but I found this show delightful! I need to seek out more of it, since there are bits I remember from when I was young that I'd like to see in context.
