Let's get in touch!

I've decided I want a few places set up where we can get in contact with each other. You can still always email me - send to namethisdragon@gmail.com, and check out my Call for Fanart if you're interested in sending fanart specifically. There's also a chat box at the bottom of the home page for quick communication. But I thought it would be good to have somewhere to actually chat as a group. And, given the always uncertain nature of communication on the internet, especially with social media sites getting worse and worse, I thought it would be good to set up multiple places.

I've created a Discord server for Debutniverse! The invite is here. So if Discord is your preferred medium, come and join in!

I've also set up a couple of IRC channels on different servers. The advantage of IRC is that IRC as a whole can't go down, only individual servers, so if we're connected to each other on multiple servers then we'll always have backup places. I've registered #debutniverse on slashnet and ##debutniverse on libera. The extra hash on libera is due to their rules for naming off-topic channels.

If you haven't used IRC before, here's what you need to know:

Pick an app or site that lets you connect to IRC - I use irccloud
On your chosen app, connect to the server irc.slashnet.org, and choose a nickname you would like to be known by
Register your nickname with NickServ - start by doing "/msg NickServ HELP" (that's the command for sending a DM "HELP" to the NickServ bot) and find out the commands from there, but the important one is going to be "REGISTER" - if you don't do this then there is nothing stopping someone else impersonating you
Once you're registered, check what settings your app has per-server to save a nickname and password, so that you don't have to log in to the server manually each time
Then "/join #debutniverse" or any way your app has of connecting to a channel on the server
Depending on your app, you might need to explicitly add #debutniverse to your auto-join list so that you join it every time you log in - "join" isn't a permanent action. On irccloud this is automatic, unless I previously enabled something I've forgotten about
Repeat the above for the server irc.libera.chat and the channel ##debutniverse instead of #debutniverse
Important differences between Discord and IRC, for those only used to the former:
- You have channels within a server either way, but on IRC you join channels individually, you don't get a list automatically on registering to a server
- IRC servers don't save any history, so you will only ever see messages that came through while you were logged in
- There's no way to upload a file on IRC so get used to using a file-hosting service, e.g. https://catbox.moe/ or https://postimages.org/
